- Midjourney text is still unreliable — generate the visual, add the words in Canva. Thumbnails that put rendered-in text through the generator read as broken within two years of style drift.
- A/B results need sample size: under ~10k impressions the difference is usually noise. Let a test run at least 48 hours.
- The thumbnail earns the click; the first 30 seconds keep it. A 2× CTR thumbnail on a 20% retention video is a loss, not a win.

Faces win on average for creator channels; objects and high-contrast scenes win for brand and product content. The real rule is consistency: whatever you pick, pick it once and make it recognisable.
How big should the text be?+
Readable at 160px wide. If you have to squint at a phone to read it, it is too small — and most viewers never zoom.
Do AI-generated faces in thumbnails count as clickbait?+
The thumbnail should represent the video. A generated face of a character that appears in the video is fine; a generated face of a person who does not, with a claim the video cannot deliver, is clickbait — and YouTube increasingly demotes it.
